Iran Has the Right to Nuclear Weapons to
Deter

The following Internationalist Group leaflet was distributed at protests in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Tacoma on June 22.
In a monstrous criminal attack, in the early morning hours of today, Sunday, June 22, U.S. warplanes bombed multiple sites in Iran on orders from President Donald Trump. At least a dozen monster GBU-57 30,000-pound bombs were dropped on the Fordo nuclear site, along with other so-called “bunker buster” bombs against sites at Natanz and Isfahan.
In announcing his brazen act of war, Trump called Iran the “bully of the Middle East,” saying it was to put a “a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world’s No. 1 state sponsor of terror.” In reality, the world’s No. 1 terrorist power and global bully is U.S. imperialism, which has armed to the teeth the genocidal Zionist butchers of Gaza. U.S. imperialism, both under Trump and his Democratic predecessors, is careening toward a thermonuclear World War III that only international socialist revolution can stop.
Trump’s sneak attack came after several days in which the U.S. president and his minions piously declared that Iranian rulers had two weeks to either agree to stop all enrichment of uranium (which they have a right to do, even under the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) or else. U.S. duplicity virtually ends all negotiations on the issue. But regardless of any phony treaties, which Israel has refused to sign, Iran has a right to nuclear weapons to deter the nuclear-armed imperialist and Zionist terrorists.

After issuing blood-curdling threat to kill Iran leader Ayatollah Kamenei, demanding unconditional surrender by Iran, Trump sent B2 stealth bombers to drop GBU-57 monster bombs (above right, file photo) on Iranian nuclear sites. (Photos: Reuters; U.S. Air Force)
The League for the Fourth International, of which the
Internationalist Group is the U.S. section, stands for
defense of Iran against the criminal U.S./Israel war, and
for defeat of the imperialist and Zionist war-makers.
Revolutionary Marxists call on working people in the United
States and around the world to use their class power,
including through strike action, to stop the infernal war
machine that has murdered upwards of 100,000 people in Gaza,
and which is now intensifying the genocide with the aim of
driving out and wiping out the Palestinian people. The LFI
stands for an Arab/Hebrew Palestinian workers state in a
socialist federation of the Middle East.
While defending Iran, a semi-colonial country, against
imperialist aggression, the LFI has never given political
support to the theocratic Iranian regime. We call for a
workers and peasants government, with full rights of
self-determination for all nationalities, as part of the
struggle for socialist revolution region-wide and
internationally.

In the United States, Europe and elsewhere, imperialist rulers have intensified repression against those protesting this wanton slaughter, outlawing many demonstrations, arresting thousands of demonstrators and slanderously equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism. The real antisemites, including messianic Christian nationalist fanatics, are backing Israel’s war of extermination against the Palestinians to the hilt. All defenders of democratic rights must urgently demand an end to the police-state repression of protesters against the U.S./Israel war.
Trump’s warmongering rhetoric, threatening to “kill” Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, and demanding the “unconditional surrender” of Iran, and now his bombing campaign despite repeated statements by U.S. intelligence agencies that Iran is not building nuclear weapons, has caused consternation among some members of his MAGA (Make America Great Again) base who believed his talk of ending foreign wars. Yet despite their qualms, and his own (after the fact) criticism of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, Trump has now entered on another “forever war.”
Some top-level Democratic politicians have criticized Trump’s actions, citing the 1973 War Powers Act, passed in response to the U.S.’ losing war on Vietnam. This toothless legislation didn’t stop Democrat Jimmy Carter from unleashing war against Afghanistan, prevent Democrat Barack Obama from launching a war in Syria or block Democrat Joe Biden from supplying the Israeli militarists with the stealth bombers and 2,000-pound bombs, which Congressional Democrats voted to approve.
With its world hegemony in drastic decline, U.S. imperialism is lashing out in a war drive ultimately aiming at counterrevolution in China, the world’s largest (bureaucratically deformed) workers state. The U.S./NATO imperialist proxy war against Russia, a regional capitalist power, over Ukraine, using the Kiev puppet regime and its fascist-infested military as pawns, along with the genocidal war on Gaza and now war on Iran, are way stations on the road to a thermonuclear World War III. The real nuclear danger comes from Washington – and remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki: the U.S. is the only power that has used nuclear weapons.
The League for the Fourth International has fought for workers action to stop arms to Ukraine and Israel as we stand for defense of Russia, Gaza, Yemen, Lebanon and Iran against the imperialist and Zionist terrorists. At the same time we call for the working class to use its power to stop mass deportations in the United States and against police-state repression accompanying the drive toward Bonapartist “strong state” rule.
In fighting against the bipartisan wars on many fronts being waged by U.S. imperialist rulers, the vital task is to break the chains that bind working people and the oppressed to their exploiters and oppressors, centrally through the Democratic Party, which is supported by the leaderships of the unions and most social movements. The Internationalist Group/LFI calls on class-conscious workers to join in building a revolutionary workers party that fights for a workers government and international socialist revolution. ■
